About Installing Floor Tile

There are five steps that have to be followed when installing floor tile. The first step is to prepare the base floor. The kitchen floor should be cleaned of all wax, grease, oil and grime with a good cleaner. It is always advisable to use a good quality, environmental friendly cleaner for the cleaning purpose. If you have a wooden base floor, it should be made smooth by removing any uneven areas and any loose boards on the floor should be properly tightened.

The technique to installing floor tile is start laying the floor from the center of the room. The measure of the room should be done exactly and the any irregularities ignored. The center location on the floor has to be marked accurately using a chalk line. Lines should be drawn across the length and breadth of the room and the place where the lines intersect is the center. Recheck the accuracy of the center position as it is very important for quality floor tile installation.

The second step is to lay loose tile from the centre along the marked chalk lines. After laying the loose tiles, measure the distance of the last tile from the wall. This will give you an idea of the size of the last tile that needs to be placed to finish the row. Once you have an idea by placing the loose tiles you can have an idea of the number of tiles required to complete the entire room.

The third step is to place different color tiles at different locations as per your choice. Open the boxes and place the tiles at the accurate places on the floor. Now, start applying the adhesives on one fourth of the floor area and wait for sometime. It generally takes about 10-15 minutes for the adhesive to dry before you can start installing floor tiles. However, the time may depend on the temperature and humidity.

Start placing the tiles along lines starting from the center of the floor. Remember, placing the first tile correctly as it is very important and determine the finish. Place each tile firmly on the ground and also against another tile. This will ensure a quality finish. The border tile should be cut accurately to give a perfect finishing to the room. When fitting a tile along a pipe or any other obstruction, simply cut the tile into that shape so that it fits exactly into that position. Do not wash the tiles at least one week after installing floor tile.

Home Upgrade Projects

Replacing Siding

One of the keys to making the exterior of a house look better is to replace the siding with new product. If the same siding has been sitting on the house for the past 15 or 20 years, it is no wonder everything looks old and outdated. And there is a good chance there are parts of the siding that are coming off, which is exposing the interior of the house in a way that is not ideal. What is the solution? The best thing that you can do is to go online and find instructions on how you can remove and replace the siding on your house.

You will be surprised to find so many detailed guides that will be able to help you out. Not only can you learn about the different wood siding types before you decide on what to put for your house, but you can also learn about how to get the job done. And siding is not something that you necessarily need installed by an expert. Sure, they will do the job quicker, but you can do it just as well. It is all about ensuring that you are following instructions and using the right tools.

Simpler Upgrades

If you are not ready to tackle siding just yet, you may want to check out something like gazebo plans online. Setting up a gazebo or a pergola is much easier as you are constructing something new. Even if it does not work out, you can just start over and nothing has changed. What you can do is find sites that will help you select the right DIY plan for building a gazebo or pergola. Then it is just about getting the necessary materials and setting up everything. Think of it like a fun spring or summer project.

Picnic Tables

Do you have that slice of hidden talent that perhaps has been lying dormant for some time? If so, it’s time to throw off those shackles and launch into a project that will prove highly satisfying to you and your family, and be a very useful addition to your patio or deck.

The new generation of octagonal and hexagonal picnic tables not only look fantastic but they also are very practical in the way that they can seat so many people. They are also simple to construct by the home handyman with the minimum of tools. They can come in various sizes to seat from 6 to 16 and even larger. Bare in mind that large tables are difficult to transport on the road and so this is another good reason to be building it yourself.

All you need is a bit of enthusiasm, a little bit of practical know-how in working with lumber, a few wood working tools and a good set of picnic table plans.

When looking for plans, check out how it is constructed. Some are much more stable than others, some have a lot of unnecessary woodwork underneath for bracing interfering with leg room.. The plans should give you a money back guarantee and provide e mail support if something should go wrong. Make sure that your plans allow for a hole for an umbrella in the middle.

Every cut on an hexagonal picnic table is at 60 degrees. All of the cuts on an octagonal table are either 60 degrees or 45 degrees and you could do all of the cuts with a miter box and a hand saw. A circular skillsaw would save a lot of time and effort while a compound drop arm miter saw would be the ultimate if you have one. (Or maybe borrow or hire one for a weekend?) Other tools required would be hammer, drill and hole saw, tape measure, small hand plane and a straight edge.

The lumber required varies with the different plans and you just need to be able to access the sizes required. The most common type of lumber used is pine and this will need to be pressure treated for outside use so that it can withstand the weathering of the elements. Other lumber can be used if you have access to it. Tables have been made from teak, kwila, redwood, douglas fir and many others. Just check with your lumber merchant about the practicalities and prices of using these. Using dry lumber will ensure that gaps don’t open up as the boards dry.

When it comes to putting the table top on there are several ways of doing it. The most effective as far as looks is concerned is to have the top that is segmented into 6 or 8 sectors depending upon whether it is a hexagon or an octagon. This does take a little bit of patience and accuracy to get it looking right with all of the pieces fitting without gaps but the finished job will be well worth it.
